It’s estimated that the United States and other Western countries must increase their production of lithium and REEs more than tenfold over current production to meet electric vehicle production targets, or else be dependent on imported materials. Electric vehicles require lithium for the batteries; rare earth magnets, most often neodymium or samarium based, comprise key components for the electric motors. SciAps offers the only handheld analyzers that can measure both light and heavy REEs from exploration and analysis through processing and compliance.

Meet the instruments

X-555

The latest version of SciAps flagship X-500 series, SciAps X-555 delivers the most advanced X-ray tube technology available, led by a 55 kV X-ray tube – the world’s only handheld XRF with this capability. The 55 kV operation, rather than the industry typical 50 kV, delivers higher performance for critical “light” REEs and some “heavy” REEs, making it a superior option for REE analysis globally. In fact, a 55 kV X-ray tube is essential to measure all of the light REEs: lanthanum (La), cerium (Ce), praseodymium (Pr), Neodymium (Nd) samarium (Sm); plus heavy REEs: europium (Eu), gadolinium (Gd), and yttrium (Y). Yttrium can be measured by standard XRF analyzers as well, and is a reliable pathfinder for the family of strategic heavy REEs such as dysprosium, thulium and ytterbium.

SciAps X-500 Series XRF instruments,  at just 2.8 lbs. (1.3 kg) with battery, are the lightest handheld X-ray analyzers ever made, delivering blazing speed and high precision in a perfectly balanced, rugged device. Premium performance begins with the 55 kV X-ray tube and up to three automated beam settings, designed for optimal performance across the entire periodic table from Mg to U. The X-555 specifically targets the rare earth elements due to soaring demand for in-field analysis of these metals. Delivering best-in-class light element performance for ultra low detection limits of elements like Mg, Al and Si, while also packing enough power to achieve impressive precision on heavy elements like pathfinders Ag, Sn, Sb, and rare earth elements, and combined with the latest large area silicon drift detector technology and super tight X-ray geometry, SciAps  X-555 provides the best analytical performance with the shortest test times.

Z-901 Lithium

Complementing the X-555, the purpose-built SciAps Z-901 Lithium LIBS (laser) is the world’s only handheld analyzer capable of measuring lithium in rocks, ores, powders and brines (scalars) for instant, in-field analysis. SciAps also offers the Z-902 Lithium package, containing a second spectrometer to extend the analytical range for users testing brines for other elements, including boron (B), magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), and potassium (K).

SciAps Z-900 Series LIBS instruments, at just 3.5 lbs. (1.6 kg) with battery, have an internal camera for precise targeting of analysis locations; a macro camera for photo-documentation of samples, reading bar codes and QR codes; a patented “sample sensor” that allows Class 1 operation (subject to LSO approval); high-resolution, rear-facing display for easy results viewing; rugged metal body for maximum durability; a tapered, narrow snout for difficult-to-access test locations; and user-replaceable argon that provides hundreds of tests at pennies per test.
