At 2.98 lbs., the SciAps X-5 handheld XRF analyzer pairs a 40 kV, 4 W tube with a 7 mm² silicon drift detector for fast, precise analysis of transition and heavy metals. It is optimised for non-destructive testing of gold, silver and other precious metals — for users who don't need magnesium, aluminium or silicon.

Stainless, high temps and red metals
Sorts stainless steels, high-temperature alloys and red metals, and verifies low-alloy, Cr/Mo and corrosion-resistant grades for NDT and PMI work. Detector Protector Technology is available to guard the detector in turnings. Note the X-5 does not measure Mg, Al, Si, S or P — it sorts aluminium by family rather than fine chemistry.

Which precious metals can the X-5 measure?
The X-5 is optimized for gold, silver, platinum, and palladium, with a standard element package that also reads related metals (ruthenium, rhodium, iridium, copper, zinc, and more). Additional elements are available on request.
Does XRF testing damage gold or jewelry?
No — XRF is non-destructive. The X-5 reads elemental composition at the surface without cutting, scratching, or dissolving the item, and a benchtop test station lets buyer and seller watch the test through a glass window.
Can the X-5 do lead-paint testing?
Yes — the X-5 offers an Industrial Lead Paint app for OSHA airborne-lead screening in industrial settings like refineries, bridges, and storage tanks. For HUD residential lead-paint assessment, use the X-550 Pb.
What's the difference between the X-5 and the X-50?
Both use a 7 mm² SDD for economical transition/heavy-metal analysis. The X-5 is the lightest, most compact option focused on precious metals, alloy, RoHS, and industrial lead paint; the X-50 adds soil and mining configurations and is the catalytic-converter specialist.
