Z-901 Alloy
General alloy testing (no carbon)
Fast, precise alloy analysis with on-board argon purge on every test, delivering high precision and improved detection limits — many customers use it to analyze and sell mill-ready aluminum scrap, and to quantify low-ppm beryllium and boron. Measures 15–20 elements across 7 common alloy bases; add more bases or your own calibrations anytime.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the Z-901 configurations?
All four are the same 3.87 lb. analyzer with a different spectrometer range and calibration set. Alloy (200–420 nm) covers 15–20 elements across seven alloy bases. CSi (190–260 nm) measures carbon and silicon as an add-on to an existing XRF. Li (380–680 nm) measures lithium in rocks, ores, and powders. Be is a dedicated beryllium configuration with a 5 ppm detection limit.
Can the Z-901 measure carbon in steel?
The Z-901 CSi measures carbon and silicon in steels, stainless, and nickel alloys, and is included in API 578 2nd Edition. It is designed to complement an XRF you already own. If you need carbon and full alloy chemistry in a single instrument, the Z-902 Carbon reaches roughly 70 ppm carbon with instant carbon-equivalent calculations.
Why does the Z-901 use argon purge?
Argon raises the LIBS signal 2–10× over air, and roughly 50× for carbon, which is what makes low detection limits possible on light elements. SciAps' patented Opti-Purge delivers it only where needed, using about 1,000× less argon than spark OES.
Which handheld analyzer measures lithium in the field?
The Z-901 Li is the only handheld that analyzes lithium in rocks, ores, and powders, factory-calibrated for pegmatite, clays, and mica-schists with 100 µm micro-analysis. For brines, or when B, Na, Mg, Ca, and K are needed alongside lithium, step up to the Z-902 or the Z-903 with the Z-9 Liquidator.
Does the Z-901 require a radiation licence?
No. LIBS uses a laser rather than an X-ray tube or radioactive source, so it avoids the licensing, badging, and inspection requirements that come with X-ray analyzers. The Z-901 is a Class 3B laser that operates as Class 1 thanks to its patented sample sensor.
Get Both With OneBox
Pair any Z-Series with SciAps' industry-leading XRF for optimal analysis across every element and sample type — same batteries, cables, chargers, and accessories. LIBS measures what XRF can't (Li, Be, B, C, F, Na); XRF handles transition and heavy metals with ease.
