SciAps Handheld LIBS Analyzer Z-903
Every element in the periodic table, in seconds, in a handheld.
The Z-903 accomplishes what no other portable analyzer has — it measures every element from hydrogen to uranium. It uses the same powerful laser as the other Z-900 models, with an extended spectrometer range from 190 nm out to 950 nm, and is available in full-range or Carbon configurations.
One Analyzer, Two Configurations
The Z-903 uses the same powerful laser as other Z-900 models, with an extended spectrometer. Toggle to full-range coverage of the entire periodic table, or the Carbon configuration for in-field carbon analysis.
Z-903 Carbon
Carbon analysis on the full-range platform
A third, dedicated high-resolution spectrometer is added for carbon, giving the rock-solid in-field carbon analysis the Z-900 series is known for on top of the Z-903's broad elemental coverage. It grades stainless and low-alloy steels with carbon down to 70 ppm, calculates carbon equivalent (CE) on the spot, and runs the same Opti-Purge argon environment and 100 µm raster as the standard Z-903 — all in the same 4.35 lb. analyzer. This configuration covers 190–625 nm; choose the standard Z-903 when you need the full 950 nm range.
Where It's Used
- PMI and steel grading — separate low-alloy and stainless grades that XRF alone cannot, including L versus H grades.
- Exploration teams who also grade metal — one analyzer covers geochemistry and carbon work rather than carrying two.
- Best for
- Steel grading alongside geochemistry

- 1Spectral range — 190 – 625 nm
- 2Carbon LOD — ~70 ppm
- 3Weight — 4.35 lbs. (1.97 kg)

Frequently Asked Questions
Can the Z-903 really measure every element?
It measures one or more emission lines from every element in the periodic table, hydrogen through uranium. The 190–950 nm range reaches lines the other Z-900 models cannot — H, F, N, O, Br, Cl, Rb, Cs, and S — and adds a more sensitive lithium line at 2–5 ppm plus an interference-free potassium line.
What is elemental micro-analysis?
The Z-903 is the only handheld offering micro-analysis in the field. Set the raster to a grid and the 100 µm laser spot maps elemental distribution point by point across minerals, veins, and inclusions — or average every raster location for a bulk result, like handheld XRF. The Geochem Pro app exports those element maps and spectra to third-party software such as ioGAS.
How does the Z-903 compare with the Z-902?
Same laser and body; the Z-903 extends the spectrometer range from 620 nm to 950 nm. That extra range is what unlocks full periodic-table coverage, the sensitive lithium line, and clean potassium. Choose the Z-902 if the work is alloys and carbon; choose the Z-903 for exploration, research, and anything needing the light or long-wavelength elements.
Can the Z-903 analyze lithium brines?
Yes, paired with the Z-9 Liquidator, which atomizes 1–2 mL of brine into a mist the Z-903 reads — results in about five seconds with no dilution. Undocked, the same Z-903 analyzes outcrops, core, and pressed pellets.
What is the Z-903 used for besides mining?
Its wide elemental range makes it common in forensics, authentication, archaeology, academic research, and oil and gas exploration, as well as soil carbon work in agriculture and environmental screening.
